If you are in Venice, you may see slanting structures such as the one, built into the corner to the left of the window.

One proposed function is they acted as a deterrent to the gents who were tempted to relieve themselves in quiet corners. Try it, and your shoes would suffer!
Another option is that they were built into dark corners to prevent thugs from hiding there and leaping out to attack unsuspecting victims.
I know which option I’m going with. How about you?
